How To Design A Great Web Site

Searching for a great web design for your site? Here are some things to consider to get your site to stand out.

Proximity – Since items that are close to each other become one visual unit, items that are related to one another should be grouped together. Using related items on a web page this way helps viewers see this information and helps them to mentally categorize the information easily. The other side of this rule is that items that aren’t the same shouldn’t be positioned close to one another.

The logic behind this is to organize information so viewers can quickly and easily grasp things. When information is organized, readers will surely read it and react to it. Readers also usually remember information that is organized.

How can you ascertain if items form a visual unit? Squint your eyes and view the page at a web site. Then count how many times your eyes stopped as they looked at the page. On a page that uses the rule of proximity well, your eyes will squint from three to five times. This means there are three to five groups of information that the eyes have to understand separately.

Alignment – You’ve seen web page layouts where the text and graphics are placed wherever there happens to be space. This makes the page messy and with no impact. Nothing should be placed on a page arbitrarily. There should be a visual connection between each item and other items on the page. When items are aligned, this creates a cohesiveness that the eyes appreciate.

The purpose of alignment is to unify the web page. Imagine a well-organized kitchen with all the pots and pans stored in the organizer, the fruits nicely displayed in a basket on the counter and the spices all on the rack. In short, everything is in place. A page layout needs the same thing.
